Lethariel of Nine Winters

An ancient Eilvaren memory keeper who remembers the coming of the Aethyr, and who guards unedited history because she knows exactly what her own is missing.

Lethariel of Nine Winters speaks for the Memory Keepers of Eilvaran and is one of the legendary mortals of Myrvand. Her living recollection reaches back to the day the Aethyr came down into the world. Yet she was already an elder when the Burning of Veyrwood took the forest where the eldest had set down their memories, and everything she had rooted there burned with the trees. Her unbroken memory begins in the ash.

Appearance

Lethariel is small and very upright, fine-boned to the point of fragility, with pale skin, faintly warm like old copper, gone translucent at the temples and wrists. Her great age shows the Eilvaren way, not as frailty but as a web of fine lines and a stillness so complete that birds land near her. Her dark gray eyes are steady and unhurried; she looks at a speaker the way a scribe looks at a line before copying it. Her white-silver hair falls long and loose down her back, and into it she ties small knots of undyed thread, one for each name the keepers have recovered from the ash. She wears the long, layered moss-green and bark-brown robes of the old Veyrwood elders, faded by centuries of wear, and around her neck hang cords of small wooden tokens, each carved with a single word. She carries no staff and no weapon, only a slab of pale wood and a stylus of thorn, and she keeps her left palm bare so she can lay it on a trunk to listen.

What she believes

Lethariel wants memory left whole, even when the whole is unbearable. She will not accept a simplified history from gods, councils, sagas or grief, not even her own people's. When the Aethyr first came, the Eilvaren received their envoys cautiously and wrote down their promises word for word, and Lethariel still measures every later account against those words. She trusts no story that claims to be complete. She also knows the cost of her conviction: a wound remembered exactly does not easily close.

Her place in the story

In the Council of Nine Groves, Lethariel fears that policy driven by grief will destroy the very culture it means to protect. She stands with Aelwen Thornsong and Miraleth Rootspeaker against the punitive line of Caerith Ash-Bow, one of the children who grew up among elders like her. She understands his grief better than anyone and refuses to let it become the record. With Sylvaren the Pale Leaf she shares the fear of losing more, but she doubts that a closed forest can remember truthfully. Meanwhile her keepers hunt the smugglers who sell memory-charcoal from Veyrwood's ruins.
