Kharun, the First Flame

The Veyndra power of fire, appetite and change, who shattered the one first light into all the stars of the sky.

Kharun is the Veyndra power of ignition, appetite, invention and transformation: life refusing to stay what it was. The fragments remember Kharun as lean and neither man nor woman, with ember-colored hair and bronze skin crossed by fine, heat-bright cracks. Kharun's face changes quickly, and the air nearby smells of metal just before it glows.

The kindling

Kharun lit the first light and taught matter to spend itself in order to become something new. Stars, breath, desire, the obsession of an artist, wildfire and revolt are all said to carry an echo of that act. The old sources are blunt about it: Kharun did not create goodness. Change can nourish or free, and it can just as easily consume.

Love and war

Kharun loved Auvra, Mother of Measure, and fought her harder than any other maker. Auvra wanted a world stable enough to endure. Kharun feared any endurance bought with stillness. Moryn, the Deep Artisan often stood between them, giving flame a hearth and law a body flexible enough to bend.

When Varka, the Name-Eater turned toward the single first flame, Kharun understood before the others that one light can be put out in one act. So Kharun broke it. The fragments flew across the great Gap as a storm of sparks, too many to unname at once, and rose to become the stars. The act saved light, but it ended Kharun's wholeness. Every star may hold a fragment. No fragment remembers being the whole. Eilvaren star-lore still notes that every star seems to sing in the same key.

What remains

Perhaps Kharun now lives scattered through every star and every living fire. The old wanderer some call the First Witness once watched a cooking fire and called it "an old friend learning a small kindness", and some take that as proof. The Vanir carry something of Kharun's hunger for life and renewal, the Æsir something of fire's fierce, transforming will. Thor's lightning and Freyja's desire touch different edges of that inheritance, though neither is Kharun reborn.

Kharun's signs: a coal inside ice, sparks turning into constellations, a broken crown of suns, the first hungry breath.
