No Throne in the Valley · act i · track 4

Ink Against the Hedge

The story

If the Crown means to rule the valley by its map, then the map will have to lie. Toman and the Quiet Paths move survey stakes by night, chalk fords onto empty air and send the measuring chains round the hill and back again. Red Fen turns east into west. The officer erases her pages and starts over without a curse, numbering every door. Then Toman slips into the survey camp and opens the iron chest. There is no gold inside, only the valley itself: roofs in rows, wells in red squares, columns for kin and trade, for who owns a bow and who missed the signing hour. The ink is meant for people, not roads. Before first light he lays the stolen page in front of Mara Brambleheart.

The stolen page Toman lays before Mara is the first thing on the table when "No Throne in the Valley" begins.

Lyrics

Their lamps went dark at second bell. We waited for the hammers to stop.

I pulled the silver stake by hand And drove it near the mere; Red Fen turned east to west, Then made the west path disappear. We switched the marks at Brindle Rise, Moved north beyond the grain; By dawn their perfect measured road Ran headlong through the rain.

If they rule us by the map, Then let the map lie. Ink may swear the road is straight; Roots know otherwise.

We chalked a ford on empty air, Drew bridges over stone; We sent their chains around the hill And brought them back alone. Their officer erased the page, Then started it once more; She never cursed the missing signs, Just numbered every door.

If they rule us by the map, Then let the map lie. Ink may swear the road is straight; Roots know otherwise.

I entered through the canvas seam While watchmen faced the rain; No gold lay in the iron chest, No orders for a chain. I found our roofs in measured rows, Our wells in squares of red; A black mark meant an empty house, A white mark: winter bread.

Beside each hearth they left a space For kin and age and trade; For who had missed the signing hour, For what each household made. One column asked who owned a bow, One named the paths they knew; The final line stood empty still: "Compliance overdue."

I came to turn their north mark south, To waste a measured day; But maps do not need marching feet To take a home away. A hedge can swallow milestones, A flood can break a span; No root can hide a written name Once carried hand to hand.

We poured the ink across the counts, Pressed wet leaves into every page; Made twenty doors from every door, Gave every child a different age. We took one sheet and left the rest, Then sealed the chest in black; Let them believe their lines still held Until we cleared the track.

If they rule us by the map, Then let the map lie. A road can lose their columns; A name can lose a life. Ink is moving past the hedge, And ravens learn to read. Tonight we hid the way to us; Tomorrow, hide the lives they seek.

Before first light I reached the hill Where Mara kept no throne; I laid the stolen page before her. Every house was known.

This was never just a road.
