No Throne in the Valley

A small green valley, an empire with a map, and a resistance trying not to build a throne of its own.

The story

The Greenfold is a valley without a map. Its Hearthkin live among orchards, mills and beehives, and find their way by reed knots, small bells, open doors and paths that only show themselves in the rain. Nobody rules the whole basin, and that is exactly how its people like it.

Then a flood breaks the old bridge at Brindle, and the Crown of Ash arrives with silver stakes, census books and a promise of stone roads and safety. The price is written in ink: every house, every well, every name. Led by Mara Brambleheart and the Quiet Paths, the valley answers the way it always has, with moved markers, vanished crossings and a thousand small refusals.

But the Crown does not stay patient, and grief can harden into something that looks a lot like a throne. As fire comes to the orchards and one village stands strangely untouched, the Hearthkin must decide not only how to resist, but what they are willing to become while doing it.
