The Price of One Warm Window

The story

Toman Reedwhistle finds a reed knot tied the wrong way, and he knows the hand that taught that sign. It leads him to copied convoy hours hidden under a stone and to a bend by the lake marked for an ambush. The convoy is not simple: armed escort and spears, but also winter flour, salves, two healers and guarded conscripts. Then, under a floorboard in Willowmere's store, he finds a torn Crown form with a black seal and a line of exemption. The signer and the terms are missing. Nella does not deny her choice. Elsi's white cloth lies beside the chart. Three voices argue over who may decide what others are allowed to know. Toman refuses to settle it alone, and carries everything to the open circle.

The knot, the route, the fragment and the bell Toman lays on the board are the evidence set out in "Moot Beneath the Apple Boughs".

Lyrics

The knot is tied against the grain, Its wet ends turned within; I know the hand that taught the sign— This is not how it begins. Past alder root and broken wall, The backward marker leads To copied hours beneath a stone, A road cut through the reeds.

One bend is circled by the lake, One rise is marked for steel; The whetstone beat lies in the mud, Still turning under heel.

Count the escort, count the axles, Count the gaps the page has made; Every missing line grows louder Where the Briar Knives will wait.

What is the price of one warm window? Who names the cost and shuts the door? If one hand keeps the dark from one roof, Who carries darkness to the rest? No folded page can answer yet.

The convoy seal is Crown-made iron; The armed ranks lead the file. Beneath the canvas: winter flour, Salves and bandage rolls. Two healer marks, labor lists, Conscripts numbered under guard; The final wagon bears more spears— No clean thing travels there.

Food for occupied doors; Spears to keep them still. A white cloth from the Honey House Lies folded by the chart; The bell asks who will still draw breath, Not who may serve our cause.

What is the price of one warm window? Who names the cost and shuts the door? If one hand keeps the dark from one roof, Who carries darkness to the rest? No convoy seal can answer yet.

The convoy road bends wide around The mere and orchard gate; I lift the board beneath the store And find the reason's shape. A Crown-form edge, a pressed black seal, An exemption line remains; The signer and the promised terms Are missing from the page.

The key turns once beside my hand. No witness joins the room. “I chose the breathing under these roofs. I will not choose the tale for you.” No line says which road paid instead, No name condemns the spared; But choice is written in the gap, And hidden choice is power.

But the same hand that hides a bargain And the hand that hides a blade Both decide what others may know Before they bear the weight.

Not the same wound. Not the same cause. Not the same measure of blame. Still, no private hand may choose What the valley cannot name.

Copy the route. Carry the knot. Take the seal; claim no terms. Bring the white cloth, bring the bell, Bring the list of guarded names.

What is the price of one warm window? Let every borrowed bed reply. Let the hands that raised the convoy, And the homes beneath it, testify. What is the price of one warm window? I carry out what none should own.

I lay the knot, the route, the fragment, And the bell upon the board. The high chair waits beside the circle; No one takes it for a throne.

Footsteps gather through the orchard. The question stays when music ends.
