Sylvaren the Pale Leaf

The isolationist elder of the Still Bough, who wants Eilvaran sealed against the world and believes the forest can only be preserved if its people are willing to abandon even their allies.

Sylvaren the Pale Leaf leads the Still Bough, the Eilvaren current of isolation, and speaks for it in the Council of Nine Groves. His argument is simple and has not changed in a long time: every opening to the outside world has brought fire, roads or debts back into the trees. The Burning of Veyrwood hardened the Still Bough, and Sylvaren draws on that memory every time he rises to speak.

Appearance

Sylvaren is tall and narrow, slightly stooped at the shoulders in the way of very old Eilvaren, with the palest skin of any voice in the Council, a copper so light it looks almost silver-white in moonlight. His long, fine-boned face is ageless except for deep lines from nose to mouth and a habit of pressing his lips thin. His eyes are a faded green, like leaves at the end of autumn, and he tends to look past a speaker toward the trees, as if listening for something only the forest can hear. His long, nearly colorless gold hair is held back by a narrow circlet of plaited willow. He dresses with old-fashioned care rather than wealth, in pale gray-green linen mended many times with near-invisible stitches, under a silver-gray mantle that falls to his ankles. His only ornament is a single bleached leaf preserved in amber. His long hands are often folded into his sleeves, and his staff of pale living wood ends in a bud that has grown closed.

What he believes

Sylvaren loves the forest itself, and the memory it holds, more than any promise made to people outside it. He wants to close Eilvaran, seal its paths and withdraw from the wars of others. He will not spend Eilvaren lives and groves on outsiders' battles, and he accepts what that refusal costs: allies and strangers left to their fate. He does not call this cruelty. He calls it duty.

His place in the story

As the Crown of Ash presses closer and resistance movements beg the groves for sanctuary, medicine and weapons, Sylvaren's answer remains the same: close the paths. His principal opponent is Miraleth Rootspeaker; to him, every refugee she brings in is a road someone else can follow. He believes Aelwen Thornsong's coalition is how war will walk into the forest. He shares Caerith Ash-Bow's distrust of outsiders but rejects his remedy, for Sylvaren would rather hide than strike. And Lethariel of Nine Winters, a fellow elder who shares his fear of loss, warns him that what is hidden can still burn, and that then no one outside will remember it. To Sylvaren, the difference between the Crown and any friendly ally matters less than the paths that both of them want opened.
